Dear Mufti Sb. Assalamu Alaikum What do Ulama say about the following matters? An organization collects Zakat and spends it in bellow activities.
1) Organizes big conferences and exhibitions 2) Runs satellite TV channel and casts programmes 3) Produces CDs and DVDs of the programmes 4) Spends on organizationĄŻs website 5) Uses it for traveling expenditure of its heads and others 6) Runs an English medium school 7) QurĄŻan distribution among the non-Muslims.
Note: Monthly fees of the school where Zakat amount is spent is around ten thousand but when a student cannot afford the whole the school takes five thousand from the student and completes the rest from the Zakat. Please answer these masail in the light of QurĄŻan and Sunnah of the Prophet (saws) if one can pay Zakat to this sort of organization? If not then what does Shariah speak about the Zakat of a person who had already paid to the organizati

The answer to your question is as follows:

Zakat can be given only to those persons who are poor, needy and deserving to receive Zakat according to the Shariah. Zakat must be given to their possession. The aim of Zakat is to financially help a poor and needy Muslim. So Zakat will not be valid if given to such organizations which collect Zakat and spend in the above mentioned activities. Those who have already paid their wealth to such organizations should take it back, if possible, and spend in ways that are prescribed by the QurĄŻan and Ahadith, else they must repay their Zakat amount to deserving people.
