Question By : Ismail Dawjee

Can Zakat money be used to purchase Medical/Laboratory Equipment in a non profitable charitable Organisation offering community service to poor and needy Muslims as well as few Non-Muslims in village. The subsidise fees income earned from such service of Muslims above Nisaab & Non-Muslims can be accounted/reused for the running of the organisation/maintenance of equipment. Extending this service to non-muslims can reduce their hostility towards Muslims as well as give oppurtunity/platform for dawah and to bring them closer to Islam. Pls enlighten if this is permissible

The answer to your question is as follows:

Zakah money cannot be used in the above mentioned charitable organization. Hence, it cannot be used to purchase medical equipments for a non profitable charitable organization which offers service to both Muslims and non-Muslims. Concerning Dawah matter let me tell you that now Islam has become so strong and well-known that there is no need to persuade non-Muslims towards Islam by giving Zakah money. Islamí»s teachings are very clear and logical. One should invite non-Muslims towards Islam. However, one is allowed to persuade non-Muslims by giving extra Sadaqah (charity) etc. Zakah money can be used only for poor Muslimsí» help. Here, it should be noted that Zakah money can be used to purchase such things that can be possessed by poor Muslims. Zakah cannot be paid if it is not possessed by poor or needy Muslims. Keep it in mind that possession is mandatory for validation of Zakah obligatory which seems impossible in such charitable organization.
And Allah (swt) knows the be
