Assalamu Alaikum
My elder brother got into the bad and unislamic habit of drinking wine. despite putting in our best efforts, we couldn't persuade him to the right path. He lost his entire business in this habit. we know he is in dire need of money and heavily in debt. one of his three children (aged around 10 that time, he is now 16) couldn't resist family querrell and came to his grandparents (i.e. my parents, who are ill and have no assets other than their children) and living with us since then. he is intelligent and progressing well in his studies. my brother know that we are supporting his son and doesn't mind it. they also meet their son any time they like.
we are now expecting some big expences towards his higher studies/job etc. please advise can I spend zakat, interest money earned from bank on his needs?

Can I give zakat/interest from bank to his father (i.e. my brother) also?

May Allah guide us all.

Dear Brother in Islam,
The answer to your question is as follows:

The above-stated details show that your brother is in extreme need of financial support and he is heavily indebted and has failed to fulfill his duties as a father, it is therefore permitted to pay Zakaat to your nephew. As for your brother, he is alcoholic and will spend money whenever he gets on drinking. So paying Zakaat to him will amount helping him in doing forbidden thing. And it is not permitted to help someone in wrong deed. The Glorious Qur¡¯an says, ¡°Help not one another unto sin and transgression¡±. (Suratul-Ma¡¯idah: 5/2) Therefore, it is not permitted to pay Zakaat to your brother so long as he is alcoholic.

And Allah knows the best,
