Br. Mufti Nazar Kaleem Qudsee and Obaidullah Qasmi

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah

There is a question regarding Masah on normal socks. Is it permissible to do Masah on any normal socks for Salah in place of washing, as few people do in Saudi Arabia? I asked one Imam of nearby Masjid and he told me it was permissible. As far as I know, only on leather socks or socks made of hard cloth ''Jawrab'' one can do the Masah.
Kindly elaborate to solve this doubt.

Dear brother in Islam

Masah on Khuffain (leather socks) is permissible by many of Ahaadeeth. Masah on non-leather socks (normal socks) is also allowed if they have the following four conditions.

1. The socks must be strong enough to walk with them for three miles without the socks tearing.
2. The socks must remain in position covering the foreleg. They should not slip. Socks having elastic to hold them in position will be regarded as being tied.
3. Water must not sweep through.
4. The socks must not be transparent or even semi-transparent.
(Raddul - Muhtaar vol.: 1 p: 191)

If any one of these four conditions is lacking, Masah on such socks will not be permissible. The non-leather socks - woolen, nylon, etc. generally made nowadays do not gather all the afore-mentioned conditions. It is, therefore, not permissible to make Masah on them.
I hope this would satisfy you. If you require information with proofs and references, write back to us.
Thanking You
