Question By : Tauheed Ahmad

Dear Brother in Islam,
Assalamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullah,
I wonder if one should offer TAHAAJUD NAMAAZ (QAYAAM-UL-LAIL) in Ramadhan as in Ramadhan we already do QAYAAM as taraveeh.
Please let me know the Sunnah of Rasool Allah SAW in this regard with reference of ahaadeeth.

Jazak Allahu kul khair.

Wassalam

Dear Brother in Islam,
The answer to your question is as follows:

¡°Qiyamul-Lail in the month of Ramadhaan¡± is a particular term used in the Ahadith for Salaatut-Taraweeh. Salaatut-Tahajjud and Salaatut-Taraweeh are two different Salaah. Tahajjud (four to twelve Raka¡¯ah) is Sunnah in the month of Ramadhaan as well as in other months while Taraweeh (twenty Raka¡¯ah) is Sunnah only in the month of Ramadhaan. Besides, Tarweeh is Sunnah Muakkadhah and Thajjud is Ghair Muakkadh. Taraweeh should be performed in congregation but there is no congregation for Tahajjud. It is forbidden to invite people for offering Tahajjud in congregation. (Ruddul-Muhtaar Alaa Durril-Mukhtaar 1: 524)

The Prophet of Islam (SAW) used to perform Taraweeh in first part of night and Tahajjud in last one. It is narrated on the authority of Hazrat Aswad (RA) that when Hazrat Ayesha (RA) was asked about the night prayer of the Blessed Prophet (SAW), she replied, ¡°He used to sleep early at night and get up in its last part to pray, and then return to his bed. When Muazzin pronounced the Adhaan, he would get up. If he was in need of a bath he would take it; otherwise he would perform ablution and then go out (for the prayer)¡±. (Bukhari 1: 153)

The books of Ahadith abound with the virtues and significance of Tahajjud. Therefore, one should perform this Sunnah particularly in the moth of Ramadhaan. This is because, a Nafl performed in the moth of Ramadhaan equates in spiritual worth and blessedness to a Firdh performed in other months. And a Firdh is equal to seventy Firdh performed in the month other than that of Ramadhaan. It is reported on the authority of Hazrat Salmaan (RA) that admonishing the companions on the last day of Sh¡¯baan the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, ¡°O men! There has come to you a magnificent month, a blessed month, a moth wherein is a night better than one thousand months. Allah has made fast obligatory and the standing of nights is optional. Whosever comes therein with a good habit, becomes like one who performs an obligatory thing besides it; and whoso performs an obligatory thing becomes like one who performs seventy obligatory duties besides it¡¡± (Baihaqi)

And Allah knows the best
