The virtues of Ramadan

Observing the Fast in the month of Ramadhan is one of the five pillars of Islam, which is obligatory on every adult Muslim male and female. In the column to follow we will emphatically discuss about the virtues of the month of Ramadhan and the promised rewards for one who keeps Fast with Iman and Ikhlas.

If we leaf out the pages of the Glorious Qura¡¯n we will find among all the commandments of Allah the ¡®Fasting¡¯ is one of the most important injunctions set on the Muslims. The Qura¡¯n says in its inimitable style:

¡®O¡¯ you who believe the fasting is periscribed on you as it was priscribed on the privious Ummah. So that you may become pious.¡¯

Describing the high status of the month of Ramadhan Allah Almighty says:

¡®The month of Ramadhan in which was revealed the Quran , a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong) ¡¯

Not only the Qura¡¯n was revealed in this monthe but some other scriptures also were sent down in the month of Ramadhan. Prophet Ibraheem (AS) received his scriptures in the first and third days of this sacred month. Prophet Daauud (AS) received Zaboor on the sixth of this month. Again Mossa (AS) received Taurah on the sixth and Prophet Easa (AS) received his Enjeel on twelfth or thirteenth day of this month.

The reward of every good deed is increased up to the status of obligatory deed while the obligatory is increased up to 70 times more than that of one deed. It means that if someone is spending one rupee for the pleasure of Allah in the month of Ramadhan he will be given the reward of seventy rupees.

There are some traditions dealing with the holyness of the month and reward given on this occasion.
Salman (RA) reports that the Prophet sallal-lahu-alaihi-wasallam on the last day of Sha-baan addressed us and said, ¡°O¡¯ people! There comes over you now a great month a most blessed month in which lies a night greater in virtues than a thousand months. This is the month in which Allah has made fasting compulsory by day and has made traweeh Prayer Sunnah by night. Whosoever intends drawing nearer to Allah by performing any Nafl (recommended virtueos) deed, for such person shall be the reward like the one who had performed a fardh in any other time. And whosoever performs a fardh, shall be blessed with reward of seventy faraaidh in any other time.

The month of patience, forgiveness, protection from fire and blessing in the livelihood

Salman (RA) reports that the Prophet (SAWS) said, ¡°This month is indeed the month of patience, and the reward for the patience is Jannah (paradise). It is the month of sympathy with one¡¯s fellowmen. It is the month wherein a true believer¡¯s rizq (livelihood) is increased. Whosoever feeds another fasting person in order to break the fast, for the feeder there shall be forgiveness of sins and emancipation from the fire of Jahannam (hell), and for the person who is fed shall be the same reward without being decreased even by a least degree from either accounts.¡±
Thereupon we said, ¡®O¡¯ messenger of Allah, not all of us posses the means wherby we can give a fasting person to break his fast¡¯ Rasoolullah sallahu alaihe wasallam replied, ¡®Allah grants the same reward to the one who gives a fasting person to break the fast with a mere date, or a drink of water, or a sip of milk.¡±
Further the Prophet (SAWS) said, ¡®whoever gives water to a fasting person to drink, Allah will grant him such drink from my fountain that he won¡¯t feel thirsty till he inters the Paradise.¡±
The Prophet (SAWS) further continued, ¡°This is a month, the first of which brings Allah¡¯s mercy the middle of which brings His forgiveness and the last of which brings liberation from the fire of Jahannam¡±

The smell of the fasting person is sweeter to Allah than that of musk.

Abuhurairah (RA) relates that Rasulullah sall-lal-lahu Alaihi wasallam said, ¡°My Ummah has been granted five things in Ramadhan which were not given to anyone else, 1. The smell from the mouth of a fasting person is sweeter to Allah than the fragrant of musk. .2 The fish in the sea seeks forgiveness for the fasting persons until they break their fast. 3. Allah prepares and decorates a special garden in Jannah every day and then says to it ¡®the time is near when faithful servants shall cast aside the great trials of the world and come to you¡¯. 4. In this month (for them) evil- minded Sahytaan is chained as not to reach unto those evils to which they normally reach during other months besides Ramadhan. 5. On the last night of Ramadan they are forgiven¡±
The companions of the Prophet sallal-lahu-alaihi-wasallam asked, ¡°O¡¯ messenger of Allah, is that last night laylatul Qadr? Rasulullah Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam Replied, No, but it is only a night (night of Eidul Fitr) that a servant should be given his reward on having completed his service.¡±

Rasulullah Sallahu Alaihe wsallam mentions in this hadith five such gifts to the fasting Muslims that are not given to other nations in the chain of Prophets.
The first one is the smell of the fasting person¡¯s mouth is sweeter to Allah than the smell of the musk. We all know that the lover regards even a bad smell from a person whom he truly loves favourably. Allah wants the fasting one complete closeness so He likes the smell of the person who fast like a lover. Fasting is one of the most accepting forms of ibadah in Allah¡¯s sight. That is why Allah Himself will give the reward of the fasting to the person while in others cases the reward is given to the slaves by His angles or indirectly.

The second favourable thing is that the fishes make istighfar for the fasting peroson. The purpse of mentionig this favour is that the all living beings including trees do ibadah on behalf of the fasting person even fishes under water. In some other Ahadith such tidings are elaborately given. A Hadith states that when Allah loves a person He says to Jebriel that He loves such and such person so Jebriel should also love him, thus Jebriel loves him and announces in the sky that all the inhabitents of the sky should love that person so and the person becomes beloved to all creatures of the Heaves and the love for this person spreads towards the inhabitants of the earth even the enimals start loving him.

The third thing that is mentioned in the hadith is that the paradise is decorated for the fasting people before coming the month of Ramdhan. As we see that when a VIP comes to meet any body or any place the venue starts being decorated for him before a month. Likewise the fasting person is a guest of Allah therefore, He decorates the paradise to welcome him in this month.

The fourth one is the rebilious Satan is enchained on this ocassion so that the fasting person would not indulge in bad deeds and the spritual castle could not colleps. The month of Ramdhan is the month of earnig rewards. The Satan is the gross enemy he becomes herdle to do good deeds. In order to give the beleivers more chance to do good deeds Allah imprison the rebelious ones. In this prespective we see that the sins in the month of Ramdhan are committed less in comparison to other months of the year. It is like a government provides more security to the eminent, respectful person to assure his safety and duty. Allah provides security to the Muslims to make them safe from evil and bad deeds, which are not less than the enemies and robbers against life.

The reward of fasting

As mentioned earlier that the reward of every deed other than fasting is carried by angles but the reward of fasting is directly given by Allah to the fasting person. Another version of the same Hadith according to some scholars went in a different ways says, ¡°I myself will become the reward for a Fasting person¡±, what great reward can there be for a salve than to gain his beloved Master? A Hadith goes, ¡®fasting is the door of all other forms of ibadah¡¯.

The reward is in the case when the fasting becomes real fasting in the true sense to please Allah and stop one¡¯s Nufs for His sake alone and it meets all the requirements of Fasting. Fasting in real sense not at all means just remaining hungry and thirsty.

The month of acceptance of supplications

In the Glorious Qura¡¯n Allah says: ¡°O¡¯ mankind supplicate me I will accept your Duaas¡±.

In a Hadith the Prophet sallal-lahu-alaihi-wasallam said, ¡°Duaa is the weapon of Muslim¡±.

Anas (RA) reports that the Prophet (SAWS) said, ¡°Duaa is the spirit and essence of the ibadah¡±

Removal of misunderstandings regarding the acceptance of the Duaas

Allah always accepts the Du¡¯aas. Muslim must have faith in the fact that his Duaas do not go in vein. Muslim¡¯s appeal is never turned down if it is made with all curtsy and respect. It is ¡®of course¡¯ the privilege for the person whose Duaa is accepted and he got the result he asked for. The month of Ramadhan is the month in which Allah surely accepts the supplications.

Abu Saeed Khudree (RA) relates that Rsulullah Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam said, ¡°Every day and night of Ramadhan Allah sets free a great number of souls from jahannam. And for every Muslim during every day and night there is time when his Duaa is certainly accepted.
Ubaidah bin Samit (RA) reportss that Rasulullah (SAWS) said when Ramadhan had drawn nearer, ¡®Ramadhan the month of blessing has come to you, wherein Allah turns towards you and sends down to you His special mercy, forgives faults, accepts prayers, looks at your competiotions for the greatest good and boasts to His malaaikah (the angles) about you. So show to Allah your righteiusness from yourselves. For, verily the most pitiable and unfortunate is the one who is deprived of Allah¡¯s mercy in this month¡¯.

Apart from this Hadith there are several traditions of the Prophet (SAWS) stating that Duaa is accepted at the time of iftar.
Abu Huraira (RA) reports that Rasoolullah Sallala la hu Alaihe Wasallam said, ¡°There are people whose Duaas are not rejected,- fasting person until he breaks the fast, the just ruler and the Duaas of oppressed whose Duaa Allaah lifts above the clouds and opens unto it the doors of the heavens, and Allah says, I swear by my honour, verily I shall assist you even though it may be after some time.¡±

Rasulullah sallalahu Alaihe wasallam informed us that when a Muslim makes Duaa by his hearty and soul, except the severance and separation from his relatives or for any sinful act, he definitely receives one of the three things. Firstly he gets the exact thing for which he made Duaa, secondly either Allah saves some of the calamities in the exchange for that he desired to have, thirdly the reward of the Duaa is preserved for him in the hereafter.

The sawm is protection against sins
Abu Ubaida (Raziyallahu-anhu) relates that he has heard Rasullullah sallahu Alaihe wasallam saying that fasting is a protecting covering for a man as long as he does not tear that protection.

Unfortunate people

Seeing the importance of the month of Ramadhan and the reward received in this month we can say that people who do not make use of this opportunity are in the loss and also they are very unfortunate people. Not to speak of the rewards which this unfortunate doesn¡¯t get, even the Prophet¡¯s curse visits him who does not utilise this month and seeks forgiveness from Allah.

The Prophet sallalahu alaihi wa sallam said Kaab bi Ujra (RA) relates that Rasulullah sallalahu alaihi wasallam said: ¡°Come near to the pulpit. And we came nearer to the pulpit, when he ascended to the first step of the pulpit he said Aamin. When he ascended to the second step he said Ameen and when he ascended to the third step he said Ameen. When he descended we said, ¡®O, Apostle of Allah! We have heard form you something, which we never heard before. ¡°He said (when I ascended the first step Jebriel (AS) appeared before me and cursed: ¡°woe to him who found the blessed month of Ramadhan and let it pass by without gaining forgiveness. Upon that I said Ameen. When I ascended the second step he cursed, woe to him before thy name is mentioned and he does not read Darood on you. I replied Ameen. Whne I ascended to the third step he cursed, woe unto the person in whose presence both the parents or one of them attain old age, and he did not achieve the paradise by serving and making them happy. I said Ameen.

The night of power (Laylatul Qadr)

After a deep look on the Ahadith and the history it becomes clear that the origin of the night of the power may be different, but the reason of this honourable night may become a story that when sometime the Prophet sallal-lahu-alaihi-wasallam tolled some stories of the pious people of the past who had done many good deeds in their life time because of their long ages like 2 hundred or 3 hundred years, the companions of the Prophet sallal-lahu-alaihi-wasallam envied to do such deeds but they could not do because they did not have such long age as the people of past used to have. Looking this enthusiasm Allah has granted them a night in which the ibadah or any good deed amounts to the ibadah and good deed of thousand months.

The Glorious Qura¡¯n says in its inimitable style:

In the name of Allah the most gracious the most merciful

¡°We have indeed revealed this (message) in the night of Power.
And what will explain to you what the Night Power is.
The night of power is better than thousand months.
Therein come down the angles and the sprit on Allah¡¯s permission.
Peace be until the break of dawn.¡±

This night ¡®of course¡¯ has a great importance in the month of Ramadhan. It needs a special attention from the Muslims. All the good deeds, done in this night bear the rewards equal to the rewards of thousand months. Allah has granted this great opportunity to this Ummah. The Ahadith are scattered on this topic urging the Muslims on doing good deeds in this night as much as one can. We mention a few Ahadith regarding this subject.

Abuhurairah (Raziyallahu Anhu) relates that Rasulullah sallalahu Alaihe wasallah said, ¡°Who stands for payer in the night of power with sincere faith and sincere hope to get reward, his previous sins are forgiven.

Anas (Razillahu Anhu) reports, ¡°Once when Ramadhan commenced the Prophet sallal-lahu-alaihi-wasallam said, ¡°A month verily has come down over you wherein whosoever is deprived of its blessings has indeed deprived of (almost) all good. And none is deprived of its virtues except he who is completely unfortunate¡±.

May Allah enable us to develop piety by fasting, and make
