Dear Sister in Islam,
The answer to your question is as follows:

There are two kinds of Sunnah; Muakkadah and Ghair Muakkadah.

Muakkadah is the Sunnah which has never been missed by the Prophet of Islam (SAW), and the emphasize has been laid on performing this kind of Sunnah. The Sunnah of Fajr, for instance.

Ghair Muakkadah is the Sunnah which has not been performed, constantly, by the Prophet (SAW) but has been encouraged on performing this type of Sunnah. The Sunnah of Asar, for example.

After reciting Tashahhud, it is better to recite Durood Shareef and DuĄŻa at the second RakĄŻah of Ghair Muakkadah as well as to recite Sana at the beginning of third RakĄŻah when these are not permitted to recite in Sunnat-e-Muakkadah. Therefore, if one recites, unknowingly, Durood Shareef at the second RakĄŻah of Sunnat-e-Muakkadah after one recites Tashahhud then one has to perform Sajda-e-Saho at the end of the Salah. (Raddul Muhtaar Ala Durril Mukhtaar, Babul Witri Wannawafil, Vol: 1/500)

And Allah knows the best,
