There is a misconcept that on the day of Eid ul Adha for each family member one animal is to be slaughtered by taking the name of that individual. If there are Seven (7) persons in a family they are supposed to slaughter seven Sheep with each sheep bearing the name of one family member.

In the name of Allah the most gracious the most merciful
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:¡°Whoever can afford it, but does not offer a sacrifice, let him not come near our prayer place.¡± [Sunan Ibn Majah- Hadith 3123]
This hadith tells clearly that if some has capacity to slaughter animal, still he does not slaughter it, he is wrong doer. And in shariah capacity means having quantum of zakat (nisab). So, sacrifice is compulsory on every one posses the quantum of zakat i.e 612.5 g silver or its value in the shape of money or objects except basic needs. The meaning of the hadith where prophet (saws) said on every family there is goat that means if someone sacrifices a goat on behalf of him and includes in the reward other family members who does not have capacity to scarify then it is permissible.
As prophet (saws) after scarifying an animal said once ¡®O, Allah accept it on behalf of me and everyone who did not scarify among my community¡¯. [Sunan Abi Dawud 2810] The hadith does not mean that if in the family there are more than one rich persons, still one animal will be sufficient on behalf of all rich family members. On another occasion he said: ¡®On goat is sufficient one behalf of only one person.¡¯ So, one goat would not be sufficient on behalf of all family members. Another hadith reads: ¡°It was narrated from Ibn ¡®Abbas that a man came to the Prophet (saws) and said: ¡°I have to scarify a big animal (badnah) and I can afford it, but I cannot find it to buy.¡± The Prophet (saws) told him to buy seven sheep and slaughter them¡±.[Ibn Maja-Hadith 3136] That means one goat is not sufficient on behalf of all family members otherwise why prophet (saws) ordered to purchase seven instead of one animal.
And Allah knows t
