Maulana Qasmi Sahib,
Assalamualaikum. Please find below a part of Prof. Rafeeullah's article posted recently in 'muslim indian' forum.

> 'Islam as a principle favoured monogamy. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) did not
> allow Hazrat Ali (RA) to marry a second woman. However in order to
> provide protection to the widows in the society, polygamy was allowed.
> Those who instead of widows, marry young virgin girls, commit the crime
> of adultery punishable with Hadd punishment of one hundred lashes.'
Allegation of adultery is serious. Therefore a thorough analysis in the light of Quran, Hadiths and sunnah is needed.
With regards
Professor Mohammad Hameedullah

Dear Brother in Islam, Mohd. Hameedullah

I have gone through a part of article written by Prof. Rafeeullah and found it from top to bottom against the teachings of Islam. Of course the Prophet of Islam (Sullallahu Alaihi Wasallam) did not allow Hazrat Ali (Razi Allahu Anhu) to marry a second wife but I would like to ask Prof. Rafeeullha, with due respect, to answer the below questions:
1. What was the reason that the Prophet of Islam did allow Hazrat Ali(Razi Allahu Anhu) to marry a second wife?
2. What message do the below-mentioned verses give?
ˇ° Marry women of your choice, two, or three, or four but if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly with them then only oneˇ±. (Suratunnisa chapter: 4 verse: 3)
ˇ° Except for those, all others are lawful, provided you seek (them in marriage) with gifts from your property desiring chastity not fornicationˇ±. (Ibid verse: 24)
3. Which verse of the Glorious QurˇŻaan or which Hadith says marry a virgin as a second wife is adultery?
I hope Prof. Rafeeullah will come out with his proofs form the Glorious QurˇŻaan and Ahadith and favour us by the new information about Islam.
