Assalamualaikum dear brother,
In some literature I find that there are 6666 verses in the holy Quran but when I add up the individual numbers of verses given in the beginning of each suras in the Quran I find there are only 6236 verses. I would be grateful if you could direct me to the source where the figure of 6666 originates. I shall be ever so grateful to you for your kind reply. Please respond.
Jazak Allah.

Dear Brother in Islam
The answer of your question is as follows:

Muslims believe in the Glorious QurĄŻaan as the letter of Allah almighty. Allah almighty Himself took the responsibility to safeguard it. The QurĄŻaan had been caring out from heart to heart and was not compiled in the period of the Prophet (SA). But after the death of Prophet (SA), the companions (RA) waged war against those who turned away form Islam and against the people of Musailame Kazzab in the leadership of Abu Bakar, the First Caliph of Islam. Almost five hundred companions, who knew the Glorious QurĄŻaan by heart, were martyred. Abu Bakar (RA) was worried to go away the QurĄŻaan with the passage of companions and asked Zayd bin thabit, the principle scribe of Prophet Muhammad (SA), to collect all the written fragments of the QurĄŻaan. The complied text remained in the custody of Abu Bakr (RA) and after his death in 634 was passed on to Umar the Second Caliph who entrusted it to his daughter Hafsa (RA), one of the wives of Prophet Muhammad (SA). After the death of Umar in 644 Othoman, the Third Caliph entrusted a commission chaired by Zayd bin thabit to make six copies from Abu BakrĄŻs master copy. When the task was completedĄŞthe copies painstakingly written down on parchment by handĄŞOthoman gathered the companions of the Prophet and had a public reading of the authentic edition. He then ordered the destruction of all other copies and sent the copies of the authentic edition to different centres of the vast Muslim world. The text of the QurĄŻaan used today is exactly the same as that of OthomanĄŻs authentic edition. It is the only book in the history of mankind which is memorized from cover to cover. At any time, there are literally millions of people who are HafizĄŞwho know the QurĄŻaan by heart.

The order of the chapter and verse is Tawqifi (by the order of Prophet) but the Awqaaf (full stops) are not Tawqifi but Ijtahadi (intelligent, pious Ulama did it). Thus the full stops and the number of the verses of the QurĄŻaan differ from School to School.

There are two main schools of thoughts in Qiraat (recitation): Kufiyyeen (those who belong to Kofa) and Basriyyeen (those who belong to Basra). The number of the verses is 6236 according to the school of thought of Kufiyyeen. And the number known to everyone, 6666 may be according to the school of thought of Basriyyeen though yet I did not come across any reference. According to Dr. Ahmad Ash-Sharbasi (teacher of Azhar university, Cairo) the number of the verses of the Glorious QurĄŻaan is 6204 and the number of the letters is 77437 (Yasalunaka fee Ddeeni walha-yat V: 1 P: 306)

We are in search of further detail in this regard, it was a good question from you, if ever we find anything more logical we would share with you Insha-Allah and we request the same to you. Too.
Allah
