Question By : shahazia noor mohammed

my brother is masha-allah 27 years of age. he is suffering from chicken pox since past four days. due to his illness he has been prohibited by the doctors to use soap anywhere on his body. he has some wounds on his cheek , chin and neck due to which he cannot shave. he has always shaved a clean skin and not a beard. in other words he has never let a beard grow. at the most he gets a stubble if there is a delay of 3 or 4 days. Now for one week when he will not be shaving, he will get a little thick stubble. keeping a beard is a sunnat of our beloved prophet and he does intend to keep a beard inshallah but not at the moment specially with the wounds on his face. also his c.a. final exams are coming up in may 2006 inshallah for which the forms with his clean shaven photograph have been submitted already. after recovery if he shaves off his slightly thick stubble, will that be a sin on him. could you please show a way out to the problem

Dear Sister in Islam,

The answer to your question is as follows:

This is the general consensus of all the four Imaams of the four schools of thought that shaving beards or shortening them less than one fist is strictly prohibited in Islam. Keeping beards and cutting moustaches are Wajib without any age limit. The Prophet of Islam (SAWS) is reported as having said, ¡°Do the opposite of what the pagans do. Keep the beards and cut the moustaches short¡¡± (Shaheeh Bukhari, Kitaabul Libaas)

Therefore, one who shaves beards and grows moustaches is committing a major sin, and he will earn the wrath of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta¡¯ala, if he has not regretted for what he had committed, and not turned to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta¡¯ala with sincere repentance.

And Allah knows the best,
