Dear ˇin Islam,

Assalamo Alaikum

The answer to your question is as follows:

Allah Almighty is pure and accepts that which is pure. He enjoins believers to eat pure which He has provided for them. The Lofty QurˇŻan says, ˇ°O, believers! Eat of the good foods that We have provided for you. And be grateful to Allah, if indeed you worship Him.ˇ± (Suratul Baqarah 2 V: 172)

According to the Hanfi School of thought, all the living beings of see are Haraam (unlawful) except fish. As far as locust is concerned, it is not amongst the living beings of see but it belongs to the living beings of land. Locust is called Jaraad in Arabic and Tiddee in Urdu language. This living being is Halaal (lawful) in the view of Shariah.

The saying, ˇ°In sea food fish and locusts are Halaalˇ± might have forced you to consider locust amongst the living beings of sea. But Allah knows where you quoted this saying from. A Hadith says, ˇ°Two dead animals and two bloods are permissible for us. The dead animals are fish and locust. As far as bloods are concerned, they are liver and spleenˇ±. I think someone misinterpreted this Hadith to you and you got confused, otherwise locust is amongst the living beings of land. (Hidayah, Kitabuzzabayeeh VO: 4 P: 442)

And Allah knows the best,
