Assalamo Alaikum

Dear Brother in Islam,

The answer to your question is as follows:

1) It has already been explained in the answer given to a question asked by you that except Imam Malik, the other three Imams had unanimously agreed that placing the palm of right hand over the back of left hand in the state of Qiyam (standing) while performing Salah is Sunnah. But they differ from each other about the place of keeping.

Since, there is no Sahih and Marfu¡¯ Hadith in this regard, the sayings of Shabah and Tabeyeen will be followed, as it is the rule of Hanfi Fiqh. After reflecting over the sayings of Sahabah and Tabeyeen, placing hands below the navel becomes more closer to the Sunnah.

Hazrat Ali (RA) is reported to have said, ¡°While performing Salah, keeping palm over the back (of left hand) and placing them below the navel is Sunnah¡±. The similar reply was given by Abu Majlaz (a great Tabey¡¯) (RH) when he was asked about the placing of hands while standing in Salah. Besides, folding hands and placing them below the navel is the best form of respect. And respect is designed in all the Rukn (part) of Salah. (all from I¡¯la-us-sunan, Vol: 2 Page: 189-200)

It also should be carried in mind that the Ahadith narrated about the placing hands below the navel are stronger and more in number than that of Ahadith reported in regard to placing hands over the chest.

Therefore, Hanfiah are of the opinion that placing the hands over the navel is Mustahab. They neither blame nor have objection to placing the hands over the chest.

2) ¡®Ghair Muqallideen Ke 56 I¡¯terazaat Ke Jawabaat¡¯ is written by Mufti Shabbir Ahmad Qasmi. He is amongst the grand Muftis of India and has deep knowledge of the Hadith and the Fiqh. Mufti Saheb teaches the Hadith in a Madrasa located in Muradabad, U.P. He is the man of his field. The research and statement of such Scholars in regard to the Hadith and the Fiqh should be respected.

And Allah knows the best,
