Dear Brother in Islam,
The answer to your question is as follows:

The case referred to the above-mentioned question is not the matter of Farz or Wajib. It is the matter of Sunnah. One should not involve oneself in such kind of argument. Since, this kind of argument brings no result except creating hatred and enmity amongst Muslims. However, almost all the Ulama had unanimously agreed that placing the palm of right hand over the back of left hand in the state of Qiyam (standing) while performing Salah is Sunnah. But they differ from each other about the place of keeping. Imam Abu Hanifah (RH) is of the opinion that placing hands below the navel is Sunnah (for man). While Imam Shafi¡¯ (RH) and Malik (RH) are reported to have said that folding hands below the chest is Sunnah. Imam Ahmad Bin Hambal (RH) is reported to have the both above-mentioned opinions but his famous statement is similar to that of Imam Abu Hanifah (RH).

The above-described difference is due to the difference of words mentioned in the Hadith reported on the authority of Hazrat Wayil (RA) in various books of Ahadith. It is narrated in Sahih Ibne Khuzaimah that the Prophet of Islam (SAWS) used to place his hands on his chest while it is reported in Masnade Bazzaz that the Prophet (SAWS) fold his hands near the chest. And it is narrated in Masnade Ibne Abee Shaibah that the Prophet (SAWS) used to place his hands below the navel.

It is to be noticed that all the above-mentioned traditions narrated on the authority of Hazrat Wayil (RA) are not authentic because of the sources. However, the opinion of Imam Abu Hanifah (RH) is proved and strengthened by the sayings of Sahabah (RA) and Tabiyeen (RH).

Hazrat Ali (RA) is reported to have said, ¡°While performing Salah, keeping palm over the back (of left hand) and placing them below the navel is Sunnah¡±. The similar reply was given by Abu Majlaz (a great Tabey¡¯) when he was asked about the placing of hands while standing in Salah. Besides, folding hands and placing them below the navel is the best form of respect. And respect is designed in all the Rukn (part) of Salah. (all from I¡¯la-us-sunan, Vol: 2 Page: 189-200)

And Allah knows the best,
