Dear Mufti Saheb,

Assalamu alaikum,

Now a days there is a tendency among people to learn word to word transalation of the Quran and claim that they could understand the meanings of the verses on their own without having to refer to any Ulema or an authentic Tafsir of the Quran ? Is knowing a literal trnaslation of the Quran sufficient to underwstand the in depth meaning of the ayats ?

The answer to your question is as follows:

The holy Qur'an is the words of Almighty Allah revealed for the guidance of mankind. Qur'an stands on the peak of literary and excellence. Everything of it is excellent and perfect. Nothing of it is done at random. In fact, people are asked to read the Qur'an and understand its meanings. But for acting upon the commands mentioned in the Qur'an, people should refer to reliable and pious ¡®Aalim of Deen¡¯ and act upon accordingly, because he understands the Qur'an in the light of life of the Prophet and his companions. Without Hadith, one cannot understand the meaning of the Qur'an perfectly. So a common man should refer to an Aalim for understanding the Qur'an.
