In the name of Allah the most gracious the most merciful

It is the unanimity of Muslim Ummah that the Sunnah of Prophet consists of his statements, deeds and confirmation plays an important role in the building of characters and purification of soul every now and then. For the Prophet of Allah was sent with 4 basic responsibilities. The Holy Qur¡¯an describes these 4 obligations and says:

¡° Our lord! Send amongst them a Messenger of their own who shall rehears thy Signs to them and instruct them in Scripture and wisdom and purify them.¡±(2/129)

The same message has been given in 3/164 as well as in 62/2. These three verses of the Holy Qur¡¯an shed light that the prophet was sent as a practical guide and has to be followed in all four branches of his portfolio. The Qur¡¯an says:

¡°Say (O Muhammad, to mankind) if you love Allah, follow me: Allah will love you and forgive you your sin. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. (3:31)

Verily! There is a beautiful pattern for you in the life of Messenger of Allah. (33: 21)

The prophet of Allah himself put much emphasis and instructed his followers saying:

¡° I advise you to be afraid of Allah and to hear and to obey even a slave who may be put in authority over you. Those of you who survive me will notice a lot of difference. It is incumbent upon you to follow my Sunnah (Practice) and the practices of my rightly guided successors (Caliphs) and hold fast with these precepts and traditions and beware of innovations and inventions in religion. For, every innovation leads to wrong path¡±. (Abu Daood and Tirmizee Mishkaat page no.30 Vol.1)

If you leave the Sunnah of your prophet you would go astray (Musnade Ahmad & Daarmi, Ahsanul fataawaa 1: 124)

Cursed is the person who leaves the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah. (Ibid.)

Allamah Ibne Aabedeen Shaamee writes in his book ¡°Raddul Muhtaar¡± narrating from Talweeh, a book of Islamic Fiqh that leaving of Sunnah Mu-akkadah is likely to be unlawful (Haraam) and person leaves this Sunnah will not deserve Shifaa-ah. (The Recommendation of Prophet pbuh) Because the prophet has said whosoever leaves my Sunnah, will not achieve my Shifaa-ah (on the Day of Judgement) (1:77)

Allaamah Ibne Nujaim Hanafee writes in his book ¡° Al-Bahrur Raaique¡± quoting from Muheet, a valuable book of Fiqh that it is not permitted for any one to leave Sunnah Mu-akkadah. (2: 49)

Allaamah Tahtaawee a great Islamic Jurist writes in his book ¡° Tahtaawee Alal-Maraaqee¡± quoting from Sharhe Manaar that according to the more correct views of Islamic Scholars it is committing sin to leave Sunnah Mu-akkadah. So far as the practice of this Sunnah is concerned it is similar to Waajib. (2: 49)

Late Maulana Azeezur Rahman head Mufti Darul Uloom Deoband also said answering this question that leaving Sunnah Mu-akkadah without any genuine reason, such as the shortage of time etc. is not permitted. (Fataawa Darul Uloom Deoband 4:206)

However, leaving Sunnah Mu-akkadah, without any genuine reason is a sinful act in all four schools of Islamic thought Hanafee, Shafi, Maalakee and Humbalee. Moreover, one cannot expect from any Muslim who really has faith in Islam that he will leave the Sunnah Mu-akkadah of his beloved Prophet Muhammad. (May the Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him)
