My parents fixed my marriage to a boy who lives in my city. After the engagement, we started to talk on phone. Now, I think that boy is not proper for me and he is also not a religious person. Can I break the engagement and is breaking engagement sinful?, DI018

Engagement is a promise and to break the promise without any proper excuse is sinful act in the sight of the Shariah. So, if really you see some bad habits in your betrothed one then you may cancel the engagement. Moreover, you must know that after engagement betrothed boy and girl do not become wife and husband but they remain strange as they were before the betrothal, so, meeting or telephonic conversation with each other is haram and forbidden and a big sinful act.
